(proving elusive) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- Searched from 1877 (a year before the birth of Phoebe’s youngest son, up to 1891 inclusive (Phoebe was listed as widowed in the 1891 census). I could find no deaths with the right age. Samuel’s age is well documented and is accurately referenced in all census returns where he is present. It also matches with the age given on the marriage certificate. Additionally I have conducted this search twice to make sure I haven’t missed any entries. This leaves two possibilities. Either the GRO index is incorrect or he died overseas He was not listed as (deceased) on William John Day's marriage certificate in 1884, and there is a family tradition that Phoebe brought up the family single handed. Also it is alleged that he left Phoebe and went to South Africa with the maid!. His eldest son Samuel Franklyn Hubert Day, emigrated to South Africa so there is a connection. Principle Probate Registry Index 9 May 1885 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Day, William, Personal Estate £4,109 12s The will of William Day of Ashford-road Maidstone in the county of Kent Gentleman who died 25 January 1885 at Ashford-road was proved at the Principal Registry by William Day of Ashford-road Auctioneer and Jospeh Day of 23 High-street Maidstone gentleman the sons the executors. Note: Samuel is not named as an executor. as the second son, it would have been likely that he would have been an executor if the third son Joseph is. Therefore it may be that he had already died by this date or had emigrated.
