He was well known and highly respected in Richmond, where he had resided for the past thirty-six years, and his death is regretted by a very large circle. Son of the late Mr. Samuel Day, of Maidstone - the Day family is one of the oldest in the county town of Kent, its members having held the position of Mayor and other important offices in the borough - when quite a young man he became exceedingly popular and well known in the borough by founding what was known as the "Medway Water Rats." He taught the young to swim in the Medway just above Maidstone, at an adjacent village called Tovil, and it so happens that a member of our editorial staff has Mr. Day to thank for learning of the art of natation and the swimming prizes he possesses. Other members of the "Medway Water Rats" became well-known swimmers and one held for three years the amateur swimming champion of Kent. On coming to Richmond, there being no one to supply the need, Mr. Day started the "Vineyard Water Rats," a club which also became exceedingly popular and turned out good swimmers. He was also well known as a photographer, and secured in his time some beautiful pictures, his lantern lectures being much in demand, and which he was ever willing to give. He served as a special constable from August, 1914, to the end of the war, and there can be no doubt that this service - so willingly given in all weathers - greatly undermined his health. He married a Miss Lillywhite, daughter of Mr. Lillywhite, of Richmond, with whom and the family - two sons and four daughters - the greatest sympathy is felt. A son, also well known in Richmond, and who is in the office of Councillor Calvert H. E. Smith, solicitor, of the Green, is hon. Secretary of the local branch of the N.S.P.C.C., and was recently appointed registrar of births and deaths for the district. The funeral is taking place on Manday at the cemetary at half-past one. 24 December 1923 Funeral of William J Day ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The mourners were: Thomas G Day Son Percy F Day Son Albert E Day Brother William Day Cousin George Lillywhite Brother-in-Law Frank Lillywhite Brother-in-Law Anthony Lillywhite Brother-in-Law Geoffrey Lillywhite Nephew Floral tributes were as follows: from your loving wife and the girls Elsie, Phoebe, Muriel and Dorothy, Tom and Mabs (son and daughther-in-law) Percy and Alice (son and daughther-in-law) Bert and family (brother) Charlie and family (brother) Baby John (Grandson) Baby Yvonne (grand-daughter) Lucy and Florrie; Emmie, Alf, Amy and Edie; Philip and Helene; George, Frank and Tizzie; Aunt Beuzie; Anthony, Edith, Marjorie and Mabel; Geoffrey and Peg; Phoebe, Ben and Sally; Grandma and Grandpa King and Family; Emily; 8 April 1946 Death certificate of Emily Madgwick Day -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------- William John Day's occupation is given as Watch Manufacturer's Representative.
