MELISSA LIGHTNER Melissa Lightner, aged 67 last Feb. died at 2:30 Sunday morning at her home in Stockport. Mrs. Lightner had undergone an operation for cancer a year ago and while at times she seemed brighter and better, there was never any hope for permanent recovery. She was an estimable woman and was highly regarded by the people of the Stockport neighborhood. Mrs. Lightner was the widow of James A. Lightner, who died in 1908 and the daughter of the late Walter Newton, Sr. The Newtons are one of the oldest and most highly respected families in the county, their ancestors coming here soon after the comencement of the settlement of the Northwest Territory at Marietta. Mrs. Lightner leaves the following brothers and sisters: John Newton, Todds; Jasper Newton, Stockport; D. G. Newton, of Pennsville; W. M. Newton, of Chesterhill; Barzilla Newton, of Port Huron, Mich.; Mrs. W. T. White, of Stockport; Mrs. Cutler Mosier, of near Chesterhill, and Mrs. Alice Brannon, of near Frazier; also 4 daughters, Mrs. Harry Henery, of near Stockport; Mrs. DeVan Bachelor [Brittigan] of Parkersburg, and Mrs. Guy Lovell, of Akron. Three grandchildren also survive. Practically all of Mrs. Lightner's lifetime was spent in and around the Stockport neighborhood. Funeral services were held at her late home Tuesday afternoon in charge of Rev.
